Starting of the last 2 tanks/4 partitions

After a long decision, I have decided not to wait for ADA Amazonia (Powder Soil) as the top overlay for the last 4 partitions..

ADA Amazonia (Powder Soil) seems to be on an islandwide (or even worldwide) shortage as I have asked friends from overseas about their stocks for these soil... The same answer from them that this powder soil seems to be out of stock as well..

So without anymore waiting.. I will just stick to cycling without the powder soil.. This set up will be somewhat different in the initial start up.. I will be just cycling with a liquid bacteria which is used by my buddy 'Vin' in Taiwan..

I have just finished adding water and did the initial planting of all the plants I wanted to place inside.. This time I started planting early is because I want the plants to fully get used to the tank and root themselves.. In a way, the plants will be able to start 'fighting' for nutrient with whatever algae that might appear during the initial 3-4 weeks..

Tanks will not have lights on for the plants for 3-4 days.. It's for them to acclimatize themselves to the tank before they starts their full growth with my 6hrs lighting regime..

Here are all the 4 tank shots:

These tanks are in their 2nd day of cycle.. Water seems very clear even at the 2nd day.. Hope this carries on..

Full rack shot of all the 3 tanks/6 partitions..

Here are the 2 products which I will be using for those 4 partitions and shall see what is the results.. I am sure the results will be satisfying.. (Let's hope I will not be 'itchy hand' to dose other stuffs to make sure this is a good test in the products.. Haha)

NB bacteria (liquid)

NB 'live' water (it's for activation of bacteria and stabilizing the tank of conditions which might cause problems in the near future)

I will be adding minerals to bring up the GH/TDS as it is cycling...

Will try update these 4 partitions as times goes by.. Stay tuned *again* (Hahahaha)...

I love everything about you website I love reading all the updates and I learn a ton form reading all you posts here. I have some questions I hope you won’t mind answering.
I am using ADA Amazonia New so I would like to know if in the first 2-3days of cycling of your tanks do you do any water changes since Amazonia leaches ton of ammonia and how long it takes you to cycle your tanks with this substrate?
SMW Bio Culture I noticed that it will raise the TDS but it will not alter gH or kH I need to look in to how it affects pH can you please tell me your thoughts on it what are your results?
Thank you
John

Sorry I forgot to ask you about ADA Amazonia.
In my experience it will keep lowering the gh and the TDS will quickly go past 200 while cycling is this why you bring up the gH and TDS after you fill the tank with water?? I always get the TDS and gH up where I want it and then ply with it as the tank is cycling.
Thank you for all you help wish I could take shrimp trips like you unfortunately we don’t have any breeders in USA

Hi John, thank you so much for your compliments on my blog.. Really happy that it is guiding fellow shrimp keepers well and hope that it will assist to create more avid shrimp hobbyist around but what I am doing might not be perfect for everyone.. So it's still up to the shrimp keeper to tweak and adjust to suit their own habits..

Honestly, I never check my ammonia reading for the first 3-4 weeks.. At times, I won't even check my ammonia reading because based on my past experience, by the 4th week, ammonia will be zero and water change is to reduce the nitrate only.. A good cycle for New Amazonia would be 4-6 weeks to make sure tank stable and mature.. No harm cycling longer and it's always good to be patience then to have problems at a later date..

SMW is actually an additive for minerals and it should increase slight GH and mainly TDS, but note that it's quite low in PH, so recommended usage will be to add to aging water used for water changes so as not to give the shrimps a sudden drop in PH resulting in PH shock..

For me when using New Amazonia, I don't do any parameter measurements as said above.. Haha.. It's my 'lazy way'.. Since I am used to using New Amazonia (after those previous few set ups), I would only measure TDS because its the easiest thing to do.. Put the TDS pen and read the readings.. Haha.. How I do it is to maintain a range of 150 to 180 TDS all the way during cycle.. And previously I don't do any water change because I want the tank to have ammonia rich water for bacteria to grow to its maximum possibility, then water change a week before adding shrimps to drastically reduce nitrate before commandos shrimps are added..

In my latest 4 partitions, I will be doing 10-20% weekly water change to reduce not only the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate but also excess nutrients which is rich in New Amazonia so as not to have sudden algae or diatom boom.. This is still trying out and see results.. :)

GH and TDS tweaking should be better to stabilize upon start up.. This makes it easier to maintain and control in the near future..

Hope this helps.. Any other questions, can email me.. Will try to help..

Happy shrimping..
